We knew these perfect warm, sunny days couldn’t last forever… and here we are! Winter weather is rolling into Bishop this weekend, bringing colder temps and a reminder that it’s still January. The temperatures are expected to drop significantly with the chance of snow starting Saturday and going into Sunday. Things clear off early next week, but the temperatures are expected to stay much colder. Though the precipitation may get in the way of climbing plans, the moisture will be very good for the area.
Winds should pick up as the cold front moves in, so batten down the hatches and make sure to not risk any fires blowing out of control. If you do get out climbing on this colder weekend, remember that layers will be your friend.
The higher elevations, Buttermilks and Pine Creek, will probably see a lot more of any snow (if it comes) and cold than the lower areas, Tablelands and The Gorge. If you head down to the Gorge this weekend make sure you are careful on those icy creek crossings.

The Bishop Area Climbing Rangers represent a collaboration among the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the Inyo National Forest (INF), L.A. Department of Water and Power (LADWP), Bishop Area Climbers Coalition (BACC), Bishop Chamber of Commerce (BCC), Sierra Forever (formerly Eastern Sierra Interpretive Association or ESIA), and Friends of the Inyo (FOI) to promote climbing conservation in the Bishop, CA, Area – specifically in Pine Creek, the Buttermilks, the Volcanic Tablelands, and the Owens River Gorge. Climbing Rangers will support local land managers and supporting organizations by performing a variety of tasks to preserve and maintain our cherished local climbing landscapes.
