Observation and Art Walk

Alabama Hills, DWP lot

Sign up Join BLM's artist-in-residence, Alyssa Marquez, between the jagged peaks of the Sierra Nevada and Owens Valley for an Observation and Art Walk within the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area. Participants will take short hikes in the rounded rocks and eroded hills to observe their surroundings and create brief artworks (e.g. drawings, photography, poetry, audio recordings, video) in response to these observations. The Observation and Art Walk allows participants to experience the environment through a focused perspective, uncovering textures, animals and sounds that might normally go unnoticed. Inspiring visitors to care for and protect public lands is a goal of the Artist in Residence program, and this Observation and Art Walk will encourage the celebration of the Alabama Hills. Annular Solar Eclipse Program

On October 14th, the solar eclipse will start at approximately 8:06 am, peak at 9:23 am, and end at 10:48 am in the eastern Sierra, with 80% coverage of the sun, creating dusk-like conditions. Join an ESIA interpretive specialist for a talk and witness one of the celestial events of the year! The program starts at 9 am at the Mobius Arch Trailhead Parking, Alabama Hills Solar glasses and an eclipse projector will be provided for viewing, paired with a short talk about the phenomenon.

Acrylic Painting Workshop and Exhibition

Sign Up Here Join Alabama Hills Artist in Residence, Kristen Freeborn, for a free acrylic painting workshop for beginners and intermediates, recommended ages 10 and up. Kristen is finishing her residency for the Bureau of Land Management in the Alabama Hills National Scenic Area. She focuses on western themes in her work, primarily in the Sierra Nevada and surrounding deserts. She is excited to meet the community in the Owens Valley and invites them to join her lesson. Supplies and refreshments will be provided. October 14, 2023 10 AM - 4:30 PM: Open exhibition 11 AM - 1 PM: Acrylic painting workshop. Landscape Illustration Workshop

November 18 from 10 am-12 pm | Sharks Fin Parking Lot, Alabama Hills Enjoy light instruction on composition, mark-making, and watercolor techniques from ESIA’s Interpretive Specialist, Ashley Anderson, in the scenic setting of the Alabama Hills! Choose your own subject while sitting amongst the rocks and take home your impressions of the Eastern Sierra.   Art supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. No previous experience required. Pre-registration is not required. Bring layers, comfortable walking shoes, water and snacks. Optionally, bring a portable camp chair or sit pad. Please allow extra travel time to account for detours in effect to get to the Alabama Hills. Ages 12 and up
